The President of India is the constitutional head of the Union Executive and occupies the highest office in the Republic. Articles 52 to 62 of the Constitution provide for the office of the President, while various other Articles define the powers and functions associated with the office. India has adopted the parliamentary form of government in which the President acts as the nominal executive, whereas the real executive authority is exercised by the Council of Ministers headed by the Prime Minister. Nevertheless, the President plays a vital constitutional role by ensuring the continuity, stability, and legitimacy of the administrative system at the Union level. The executive powers of the President are provided under Article 53, according to which the executive power of the Union is vested in the President and is exercised either directly or through officers subordinate to him in accordance with the Constitution. The President appoints the Prime Minister and, on the advice of the Prime Minister, appoints the other members of the Council of Ministers. The President allocates portfolios on the advice of the Prime Minister and administers the oath of office and secrecy to the ministers.
