The political developments in the Deccan and South India from the mid-6th century A.D. to the 10th century A.D. were marked by the rise and decline of several powerful dynasties, frequent conflicts for territorial control, expansion of regional kingdoms, and the growth of new political institutions. This period witnessed the emergence of important ruling houses such as the Chalukyas of Badami, Pallavas of Kanchi, Rashtrakutas of Manyakheta, Pandyas, and later Cholas, which played a significant role in shaping the political history of peninsular India. During the mid-6th century A.D., the Deccan region was dominated by the rise of the Early Chalukyas of Badami. Pulakeshin I established the Chalukya dynasty around the middle of the 6th century and made Vatapi (modern Badami) his capital. The Chalukyas expanded their authority over large parts of the Deccan under rulers like Kirtivarman I and Mangalesha. However, the most powerful ruler of this dynasty was Pulakeshin II (610–642 A.D.). He extended Chalukya control over much of the Deccan and successfully resisted the north Indian emperor Harshavardhana on the banks of the Narmada.
