In the matter of Rural Development, Thakur (1 977), in his study ofGujarat Dairy Cooperatives observes that 'using a part of their annual savings, the Milk Cooperatives-unions as well as societies in collaboration have built up an extensive system to provide various rural development services. They assist in cattle development, cooperative propaganda and education. the establishment of schools, libraries, health centres, youth clubs, the construction of roads and the provision of water supplies and electricity connections in the villages. The reserve funds are used partly to build up assets such as milk collection centres, telephone facilities, store rooms and the like to help the cooperatives run efficiently.

The micro-studies reveal that milk for consumption by the family became available for the first time in many cases after the purchase of scheme animal.
