Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) are a decentralized system of local self-government in India. The system was introduced in 1959 with the aim of promoting participatory democracy at the grass-root level. The 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1992 further strengthened the PRIs and made them an integral part of the Indian democratic system. The functions of PRIs are vast and include the provision of basic services to citizens, preparation and implementation of development plans, social and economic justice, and the promotion of democracy and civic participation.
