The fisheries sector plays a critical role in food security, nutrition, and livelihood for millions of people globally, especially in coastal and riverine communities. Women constitute a significant portion of the workforce in the fisheries sector, primarily in post-harvest activities such as processing, trading, and marketing. However, their role often remains under-recognized and under-supported. In the context of gender issues in agriculture, rural livelihoods, and natural resource management, it is essential to evaluate and promote opportunities available for women to access resources and services in the fisheries sector. Women in fisheries face several barriers such as limited access to credit, land and water rights, education, technology, decision-making roles, and institutional support. Addressing these issues and leveraging existing and emerging opportunities can empower women and enhance their contribution to the sector and rural economy. 1. Access to Financial Resources: One of the primary constraints women face in the fisheries sector is limited access to credit and financial services. Many women lack collateral and financial literacy, which prevents them from obtaining loans from formal financial institutions. However, microfinance institutions and self-help groups (SHGs) have emerged as vital platforms for women to access small-scale credit for fisheries-related activities. Various government schemes and development projects such as the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) in India have provisions for credit-linked subsidies for women entrepreneurs in fisheries. NGOs and international development agencies have also promoted financial inclusion through women-focused cooperatives and savings groups, helping women invest in equipment, cold storage, transport, and processing units. 2. Capacity Building and Skill Development: Skill development and training programs are critical in enabling women to engage effectively across the fisheries value chain. Several government and non-governmental organizations conduct training programs for women in fish handling, processing, hygienic practices, quality control, packaging, and value addition. Increased access to training in aquaculture, cage farming, ornamental fish breeding, and integrated fish farming has opened new livelihood opportunities for women.
