Inland fishing, which refers to fishing activities carried out in freshwater bodies such as rivers, lakes, ponds, reservoirs, and wetlands, plays a critical role in rural livelihoods and food security in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries like India. From a gender perspective, inland fishing presents significant opportunities for women’s economic development, despite the persistent structural and cultural barriers they face. Women’s participation in inland fisheries is often underrecognized in formal economic systems, yet they contribute meaningfully across the value chain—from fish harvesting and post-harvest processing to marketing and aquaculture. Women’s involvement in inland fishing is particularly prominent in post-harvest activities such as cleaning, drying, smoking, and selling fish in local markets. These tasks, although often categorized as informal or auxiliary work, are essential for adding value to the product and ensuring its marketability. With improved access to resources, technology, credit, and decision-making processes, women's roles in inland fishing can transition from being marginally involved to being central actors in the sector. This transition is essential not only for achieving gender equality but also for improving household incomes and rural livelihoods. The economic potential of inland fishing for women is multifold. One major opportunity lies in aquaculture, especially small-scale fish farming in community ponds or household tanks. In states like West Bengal, Odisha, and Assam, several women’s self-help groups (SHGs) have successfully adopted aquaculture practices. For example, in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district, women’s cooperatives have been trained in scientific fish farming methods and provided with fingerlings, feed, and access to microcredit. As a result, many women have not only ensured household fish consumption but have also generated surplus income by selling fish in local markets.
