Women play a vital yet often underrecognized role in the fisheries sector across the globe, especially in countries with significant coastal and inland water resources like India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and parts of Africa and Latin America. Their participation spans across pre-harvest, harvest, and post-harvest activities including fish processing, net-making, marketing, and aquaculture. Despite their central involvement, women often face considerable challenges in accessing resources, services, decision-making spaces, and entitlements due to entrenched gender norms, legal exclusions, and institutional biases. However, in recent years, a series of policy interventions, community-based programs, technological innovations, and gender mainstreaming efforts have opened up new opportunities for women to access and benefit from fisheries-related resources and services. One of the primary areas of opportunity for women in the fisheries sector is aquaculture development. With the rapid expansion of aquaculture as a key component of rural livelihoods and food security, governments and development agencies have recognized the potential of including women in aquaculture value chains. Initiatives like the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) in India, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy of the African Union, and projects by the FAO and WorldFish promote inclusive aquaculture practices. These initiatives focus on providing training, seed capital, technical knowledge, and credit support to women to undertake fish farming in ponds, tanks, and cages. In countries like Bangladesh, women are increasingly involved in small-scale aquaculture, particularly in managing backyard ponds, which allows them to balance household responsibilities while generating income. Access to institutional credit and microfinance has significantly improved women's entry into the fisheries sector, particularly in processing and marketing. Microfinance institutions (MFIs) and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have played a pivotal role in this regard.
