Men were predominantly engaged in public, physical, or leadership work like farming, trade, governance, and warfare. Women, on the other hand, were relegated to domestic roles such as child-rearing, cooking, and managing the household. Women's work was largely invisible in economic terms despite its significance for social reproduction. This form of stratification restricted women's access to education, property rights, and decision-making roles. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, changes in production systems and urbanization began to shift gender roles.
