The bar code system is an important component of biomedical waste management under the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016, as amended. It has been introduced to improve traceability, accountability and monitoring of biomedical waste from the point of generation to its final treatment and disposal. The system enables the authorities to identify the healthcare facility from which waste originates, determine the quantity and category of waste transported, and track its movement through the common bio-medical waste treatment and disposal facility. It therefore helps prevent illegal dumping, improper transportation, unauthorised disposal and mixing of biomedical waste with general municipal waste. Under the BMWM Rules, 2016, every occupier or operator handling biomedical waste is required to comply with the applicable provisions concerning segregation, collection, storage, transportation, treatment and disposal. The bar code system is particularly relevant for healthcare facilities and common biomedical waste treatment facilities because it creates an electronic record of the movement of waste. The system is intended to provide a reliable chain of custody for biomedical waste. The first guideline is that biomedical waste must be segregated at the point of generation according to the prescribed colour-coded categories. Waste should not be mixed with general waste or with biomedical waste belonging to another category. The main categories are yellow, red, white and blue.
