Answer :
Word Count : 467
Khayal singing is one of the most important and popular forms of Hindustani classical music. The word ‘Khayal’ literally means imagination, and as the name suggests, it gives immense scope for creativity and improvisation to the performer. This style of music originated in the medieval period and is believed to have developed under the patronage of Sultan Hussain Shah Sharqi of Jaunpur in the fifteenth century, and later refined by Amir Khusrau and the musicians of the Mughal court. Khayal gradually replaced Dhrupad as the dominant form of classical singing because of its flexible structure and emphasis on emotional expression.
