Treatment of lamellar fragments with neutral detergents releases these particles, designated photosystem I and photosystem II, respectively. Subsequent harsher treatment (with charged detergents) and separation of the individual polypeptides with electrophoretic techniques have helped identify the components of the photosystems. Each photosystem consists of a light-harvesting complex and a core complex.
