   The Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP), launched in 1978, was one of the earliest attempts to alleviate rural poverty. Its objective was to provide income-generating assets to poor families, particularly those from disadvantaged communities such as Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other backward classes. The program aimed to enhance the earning capacity of rural families by providing financial assistance for the acquisition of assets like cattle, small-scale industries, and land.

   The approach was based on the belief that providing financial support would empower rural households to become self-sufficient. 2. Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA)

   MGNREGA, launched in 2005, represents a shift towards a rights-based approach to poverty alleviation. This program guarantees 100 days of wage employment to rural households, primarily focusing on the creation of rural infrastructure. The objective is to provide employment opportunities for the rural poor, especially during lean agricultural seasons, and reduce distress migration.
