Self-Help Groups (SHGs) are groups of people who come together to address common challenges and find solutions to their problems. The concept of SHGs has been in existence for centuries in different forms, but its modern form has its roots in the microfinance movement of the 1970s.

The microfinance movement began as an attempt to provide small loans to poor people who did not have access to traditional banking services. The idea was to provide them with the necessary funds to start their own businesses and become self-reliant. However, it soon became apparent that simply providing loans was not enough. Many borrowers lacked the necessary skills and knowledge to manage their businesses effectively, and they often lacked the social networks and support systems necessary to overcome the many challenges they faced.
