Akbar's relations with the Rajputs stand as a cornerstone of his broader policy of political integration and imperial consolidation in the Indian subcontinent. His engagement with the Rajput clans was not only a military or diplomatic necessity but also a calculated ideological and administrative decision that allowed him to transcend the narrow confines of Turko-Mongol aristocracy and forge a more inclusive Mughal polity. These relations underwent phases of conquest, conciliation, alliance-building, and strategic co-option, reflecting both pragmatic statecraft and ideological innovation. A critical evaluation of Akbar’s Rajput policy must examine its political, military, cultural, and administrative dimensions, as well as its limitations.
