The study of caste in India has been approached from multiple perspectives, two of the most prominent being the “book-view” and the “field-view.” These represent different ways of understanding the caste system, its functioning, and its role in Indian society. The “book-view” is largely derived from classical texts, scriptures, and religious literature, while the “field-view” is grounded in anthropological and sociological fieldwork, based on the lived realities of communities. A comparison of these two perspectives reveals how they differ in their assumptions, focus, and conclusions, while also showing the ways in which they complement one another in offering a fuller understanding of caste in India. The “book-view” of caste is rooted in ancient Hindu texts such as the Vedas, the Dharmashastras, the Manusmriti, and other Brahmanical religious literature. According to this perspective, Indian society is organized on the basis of the Varna system, which divides people into four broad categories: Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras. Outside this framework are the so-called “untouchables,” who are relegated to the lowest status. The Varna system is described as a hierarchy based on purity and pollution, with the Brahmins occupying the highest position due to their ritual and spiritual authority, and the Shudras occupying the lowest due to their association with manual and menial labor.
