The rural society of peninsular India has historically been characterized by a close relationship between land, agriculture, caste, kinship, village institutions, and local political authority. The term peninsular India broadly refers to the Deccan and southern regions, including present-day Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Although rural society in these regions was never completely uniform, certain common features can be identified in its social organization and historical development. The nature of rural society changed considerably from the early historic period through the medieval and colonial periods, yet agriculture remained the principal foundation of social and economic life. One of the most important features of rural society in peninsular India was the central position of the village as a social and economic unit. Villages were generally based on settled agriculture, with households depending on cultivation, cattle rearing, craft production and other occupations. The availability of water was particularly significant in the relatively dry regions of the Deccan. Tanks, wells, canals and other irrigation arrangements played an important role in sustaining agriculture. In parts of Tamil Nadu, for example, elaborate tank irrigation encouraged settled cultivation and shaped the organization of village communities. In river valleys such as those of the Krishna, Godavari and Kaveri, fertile agricultural regions supported dense settlements and more complex social structures. The village community was not an isolated or completely self-sufficient institution. It was connected with markets, towns, temples, political authorities and wider networks of trade. Nevertheless, everyday social life was strongly organized around the village. Landholding families, cultivators, agricultural labourers, artisans, pastoral groups and service communities performed different economic functions. The distribution of land and control over water resources often determined social status and political influence. Consequently, rural society contained significant inequalities based on property, caste and access to resources. Caste was another major feature of rural social organization. The caste system in peninsular India developed distinctive regional forms, although the basic principle of hereditary occupation and social hierarchy remained important.
