Colostrum is the first milk secreted by the mammary glands during the initial two to four days after childbirth. It is a thick, sticky, yellowish fluid that is often referred to as "liquid gold" because of its exceptional nutritional and protective qualities. Although produced in small quantities, colostrum is perfectly suited to meet the nutritional and physiological needs of the newborn. It provides essential nutrients, immune factors, growth-promoting substances, and bioactive compounds that help the infant adapt to life outside the womb. From the perspective of community nutrition, colostrum feeding is one of the most effective and economical interventions for promoting child survival, reducing neonatal mortality, and ensuring healthy growth and development. The composition of colostrum differs significantly from mature breast milk. It contains higher concentrations of proteins, immunoglobulins, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and white blood cells while containing relatively lower amounts of fat and lactose. The high protein content helps in tissue growth and repair, while the lower fat content makes it easier for the immature digestive system of the newborn to process. Colostrum is also rich in vitamin A, carotenoids, zinc, sodium, and other micronutrients essential for maintaining vision, skin integrity, immunity, and cellular functions. One of the most remarkable characteristics of colostrum is its high concentration of immunoglobulins, particularly Immunoglobulin A (IgA). Secretory IgA forms a protective coating over the lining of the infant's gastrointestinal tract, preventing the attachment and invasion of harmful microorganisms. It provides passive immunity by transferring maternal antibodies to the newborn, thereby protecting the infant from infections during the early days of life when the baby's immune system is still immature. Other immunoglobulins such as IgG and IgM are also present and contribute to immune protection. Colostrum contains numerous living immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and leukocytes. These cells actively destroy harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
