Anthropometry involves the systematic measurement of the physical dimensions and composition of the human body. It is simple, economical, non-invasive, and suitable for large-scale community surveys. It provides valuable information about growth, body composition, and nutritional status across different age groups. Anthropometric assessment is based on the principle that good nutrition supports normal growth and development, while poor nutrition leads to measurable changes in body size and proportions. The method compares the measurements of an individual with standard reference values established for healthy populations. Any significant deviation from these standards may indicate undernutrition, overnutrition, or growth disorders. The anthropometric method is extensively used in maternal and child health programmes, school health services, nutrition surveys, and public health research.
