One of the most significant social media-based activism movements I personally observed was the #MeToo movement. Originating in 2006 by Tarana Burke, it gained widespread momentum in 2017, when it was amplified by a tweet from actress Alyssa Milano. The campaign aimed to highlight the pervasive issue of sexual harassment and assault, especially in the workplace, and encouraged survivors to share their stories. It soon spread globally, transforming from a simple hashtag into a widespread political and social campaign. The participation patterns in the #MeToo movement were particularly compelling due to their diversity.
