The Neolithic Revolution refers to the fundamental transformation in human society from a nomadic, food-gathering and hunting way of life to a settled, food-producing economy based on agriculture and animal domestication. The term was popularized by the archaeologist V. Gordon Childe, who described it as a revolutionary change because it led to the emergence of permanent settlements, technological innovations, surplus production, social differentiation, and the foundation of later civilizations. In the Indian context, the Neolithic period marks the beginning of farming communities, polished stone tools, pottery, weaving, domestication of animals, and village life. Although the transition occurred at different times in different regions, the Neolithic phase in India generally extends from around 7000 BCE to 2000 BCE, with regional variations. The Neolithic Revolution in India was not a sudden event but a gradual process influenced by local environmental conditions and cultural developments. The shift to agriculture enabled humans to settle in one place, cultivate crops, rear livestock, and develop stable communities. The cultivation of wheat, barley, rice, millets, pulses, and legumes, along with the domestication of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and dogs, became characteristic features of Neolithic societies. Improved tools made from polished stone, bone, and antler increased agricultural efficiency. Pottery production facilitated food storage, while weaving and basket-making became common household activities. One of the earliest and most significant Neolithic sites in the Indian subcontinent is Mehrgarh, located in present-day Balochistan, Pakistan. Dating back to around 7000 BCE, Mehrgarh represents one of the earliest farming communities in South Asia. Excavations have revealed mud-brick houses, granaries, storage facilities, domesticated wheat and barley, cattle, sheep, and goats. The people practiced agriculture, animal husbandry, pottery-making, bead manufacturing, and long-distance trade. Burials with ornaments and grave goods indicate emerging social distinctions. Mehrgarh forms the earliest evidence for the beginning of settled agricultural life in the Indian subcontinent and provides a link between hunting-gathering societies and the later Indus Valley Civilization. Another important Neolithic site is Burzahom in Kashmir. Located near Srinagar, Burzahom dates between approximately 3000 BCE and 1500 BCE.
