Robert Redfield’s concept of the *folk-urban continuum* provides an important theoretical framework for understanding the transition from traditional, rural, and isolated communities to more complex, urban, and heterogeneous societies. Though Redfield’s formulation is grounded in anthropological studies of Latin America, it is significantly useful when applied as a conceptual tool for analyzing medieval Indian society, particularly during the period of c. 1206–1550. In the Indian context, the folk-urban continuum helps historians comprehend the intricate relationships between villages and urban centers, especially in the backdrop of the Delhi Sultanate and early provincial states. Redfield described the folk society as small, isolated, non-literate, and homogeneous, with a sacred orientation, strong family and kinship ties, and limited division of labor. Urban society, on the other hand, is characterized by greater diversity, secularization, specialization of roles, and individualism. Between these two poles lies a continuum, where features blend rather than abruptly change. In medieval India, this continuum is evident in how rural and urban domains interacted, particularly through religious, cultural, economic, and political channels.
