Neighbourhood networks during the period c.1206–1550 in India played a critical role in shaping the socio-economic and political structures of urban centres. These networks, often overlooked in conventional political histories, were essential for the day-to-day functioning of cities, trade, administration, and social cohesion. The period under review, which broadly spans the Delhi Sultanate and the regional kingdoms that emerged before the consolidation of Mughal authority, witnessed significant urbanisation, especially in the Indo-Gangetic plain, the Deccan, and parts of peninsular India. Within these urban spaces, neighbourhoods emerged as semi-autonomous units characterised by internal solidarity, social organisation, occupational linkages, and localised governance. The term "neighbourhood" refers to a spatially bounded community within a city, often demarcated along lines of caste, occupation, religion, or ethnicity. These were referred to by various terms such as *mohalla*, *para*, *vata*, or *kampu* depending on the region and local language. In cities like Delhi, Jaunpur, Gulbarga, Bidar, and Vijayanagara, neighbourhoods played an important role in organising daily life, especially in the absence of strong municipal infrastructure. The inhabitants of these localities often formed close-knit communities with collective interests and responsibilities, including water management, sanitation, protection of religious or cultural sites, and dispute resolution. One of the key characteristics of neighbourhood networks was their occupational specialization. Many neighbourhoods were dominated by specific occupational groups, such as weavers, potters, metal workers, perfumers, scribes, or merchants. This was particularly true in cities like Delhi and Multan, where guild-like organisations or craft-based communities had their own rules, elders, and codes of conduct. These occupational clusters allowed for the transmission of skills across generations and supported the production of specialised goods for both local consumption and long-distance trade.
