The National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) is a comprehensive public health initiative in India aimed at preventing the spread of HIV infection and providing care, support, and treatment to people living with HIV/AIDS. Launched in 1992 by the Government of India under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, it has evolved through several phases, each focusing on specific objectives. HIV Prevention Services Prevention remains the cornerstone of the NACP. It aims to reduce new infections by targeting high-risk and vulnerable populations and promoting behaviour change. * Targeted Interventions (TIs): These are focused on key populations such as Female Sex Workers (FSWs), Men who have Sex with Men (MSM), Injecting Drug Users (IDUs), and Transgender people. Services include condom promotion, needle-syringe exchange programmes, STI treatment, and peer-led outreach. * Condom Promotion: Both male and female condoms are promoted through social marketing campaigns and free distribution at high-risk intervention sites, health centres, and community-based organisations. * Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission (PPTCT): Pregnant women are tested for HIV during antenatal check-ups, and HIV-positive mothers are given ART to prevent transmission to the child during childbirth and breastfeeding. * Blood Safety: NACO ensures that all blood and blood products are screened for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and malaria.
