India, being a country with diverse socio-cultural beliefs, varying levels of literacy, and health awareness, faces unique challenges in busting these myths. Understanding these misconceptions is essential in designing targeted awareness and intervention strategies. One of the most common myths in India is the belief that HIV can be transmitted through casual contact. Many people wrongly assume that HIV can spread through hugging, shaking hands, sharing food, drinking from the same cup, using the same toilet, or even through mosquito bites. This misconception stems from a lack of understanding about how HIV is transmitted. Scientifically, HIV is transmitted through specific body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids, and breast milk. It cannot survive outside the human body for long and cannot be transmitted by touch or through the air. The fear of casual transmission contributes to the ostracization of PLHIV in workplaces, schools, and even in healthcare settings.
