The system of education in India underwent significant transformation during the period of British colonization. Before the arrival of the British, India had a well-established and diverse educational tradition that included institutions such as gurukuls, madrasas, and pathshalas. Education was largely community-based and focused on religious, philosophical, linguistic, and practical knowledge. Learning was often imparted in local languages, and the system was supported by local communities and rulers. However, with the advent of colonial rule, the nature, structure, and objectives of education in India changed considerably as the British introduced policies that aligned education with their administrative and political interests. One of the most important impacts of colonization on the Indian education system was the introduction of Western education. The British sought to create a class of educated Indians who could assist them in administration. This intention was clearly reflected in Thomas Babington Macaulay’s famous Minute on Education in 1835, which advocated the promotion of English education in India. Macaulay argued that Western knowledge and literature were superior and that English should become the medium of instruction. As a result, traditional Indian systems of education began to decline, while English-medium schools and colleges started expanding. The emphasis shifted from indigenous knowledge systems to Western sciences, humanities, and administrative subjects. Another major development was the establishment of modern educational institutions. The British introduced a structured system of schools, colleges, and universities modeled on the British system. Wood’s Despatch of 1854 is often regarded as the Magna Carta of English education in India because it laid the foundation for a systematic educational policy.
