Sanskritisation is a sociological concept developed by M.N. Srinivas to describe the process by which lower castes in Indian society seek upward social mobility by adopting the customs, rituals, practices, and lifestyle of the upper castes, particularly the Brahmins. It involves the emulation of Sanskritic traditions, including vegetarianism, teetotalism, temple worship, purification rituals, and the adoption of the Sanskrit language and Vedic values. Though not necessarily leading to caste mobility in a formal sense, Sanskritisation results in cultural mobility and can impact the perception and identity of caste groups over time.
