The Stockholm Conference, held in 1972, was the first major international gathering focused exclusively on environmental issues. It marked a turning point in the development of global environmental politics. The key theme of this conference was “Only One Earth,” highlighting the necessity to preserve the environment for future generations. The conference brought together 113 countries and led to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). One of the significant outcomes of the Stockholm Conference was the understanding that environmental degradation is linked to development practices and that poverty in developing countries contributes to environmental problems. The conference emphasized the need for a common outlook and principles to inspire and guide the people of the world in the preservation and enhancement of the human environment.
