In this system, the clan or *kur* is the central unit, and all members of a clan are considered descendants of a common female ancestor. The Khasi society is organized into several matrilineal clans (*kur*), each of which is exogamous, meaning marriage within the same clan is prohibited. Each *kur* is subdivided into lineages, and the clan identity is passed from the mother to the children. The youngest daughter, known as *Ka Khadduh*, inherits the ancestral property and assumes the role of the custodian of lineage continuity. Despite being matrilineal, Khasi society is not matriarchal. Authority and decision-making often lie with maternal uncles or male members of the mother’s clan. The maternal uncle plays a significant role in the upbringing and socialization of his sister’s children.
