Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also referred to as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are infections that are primarily transmitted through sexual contact. These infections are caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi and are spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sexual activity. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the virus that leads to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), is also mainly transmitted through sexual contact. Because of the similarity in modes of transmission and the biological effects of STDs on the body, there exists a close and significant relationship between STDs and HIV/AIDS. Understanding this relationship is essential in the field of public health for effective prevention, control, and management strategies. One of the most important relationships between STDs and HIV/AIDS lies in their common modes of transmission. Both STDs and HIV are primarily transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse, sharing of contaminated needles, blood transfusions with infected blood, and from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. Individuals who engage in behaviors that expose them to STDs are therefore also at increased risk of acquiring HIV infection. For example, unprotected sex with multiple partners, lack of awareness about sexual health, and inadequate use of preventive measures increase the likelihood of contracting both STDs and HIV.
