The Bio-Medical Waste Management (BMWM) Rules, 2016, as amended, have incorporated specific provisions for the implementation of a bar code system as a means to ensure accountability, traceability, and transparency in the handling of bio-medical waste. These guidelines have been introduced by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. The objective behind this system is to facilitate real-time monitoring of waste collection, transportation, and disposal from healthcare facilities to the final treatment and disposal points. The bar code system is an integral part of the broader digitization and modernization efforts in biomedical waste management. It is designed to ensure that waste generated from healthcare units is properly tracked and handled as per the provisions of the BMWM Rules. This system minimizes the risk of illegal dumping, ensures that only authorized handlers deal with hazardous waste, and enhances the capacity of authorities to supervise waste management operations. Under the BMWM Rules 2016 (as amended), the bar code system is applicable to all healthcare facilities (HCFs), including hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, veterinary institutions, research and medical laboratories, and also to Common Bio-medical Waste Treatment Facilities (CBWTFs).
