Planning in India has been a cornerstone of the nation’s economic and social development since independence in 1947. The concept of planning in India emerged out of the necessity to overcome widespread poverty, illiteracy, and underdevelopment in rural and urban areas. Planning in India is structured at multiple levels to ensure coordinated development across diverse sectors, regions, and communities. These levels of planning can broadly be categorized into three major tiers: central or national level planning, state or regional level planning, and local or grassroot level planning.
