Intersectionality, as a concept, refers to the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as gender, caste, class, religion, sexuality, and region, which create overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage. Coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in a Western academic context, intersectionality becomes particularly nuanced and relevant when applied to the Indian socio-political landscape due to its complex history of caste-based hierarchy, religious pluralism, economic disparities, and entrenched patriarchal norms. In the Indian context, intersectionality helps in understanding how gender-based discrimination is not uniform but varies significantly depending on the intersecting identities a person holds. One of the most significant axes of intersectionality in India is caste. Gender and caste operate together to marginalize Dalit, Adivasi, and other backward-caste women more severely than their upper-caste counterparts. While all women may face gender-based oppression, Dalit women face a triple burden: of caste discrimination, gender-based violence, and economic marginalization. Their experiences are often excluded from mainstream feminist narratives, which are largely dominated by upper-caste, urban, English-speaking women. Thus, intersectionality reveals how dominant discourses in science and society may invisibilize the struggles of the most marginalized women. Class is another critical factor. A woman from an urban, middle-class background may have access to scientific education and career opportunities, while a woman from a rural, poor background may be deprived of basic schooling, let alone access to STEM fields.
