Any development programme adopted by a country can only be considered sustainable if it balances the three essential dimensions of development: economic growth, social progress, and environmental protection. These three pillars form the foundation of the concept of sustainable development, which was popularized after the Brundtland Commission Report in 1987. The report defined sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. If development only focuses on economic progress without social inclusivity or environmental safeguards, it may generate short-term benefits but will not be viable in the long run. Therefore, I agree that sustainability must be judged on economic, social, and environmental dimensions simultaneously, and only when these dimensions are integrated can a programme be called truly sustainable. Economically sustainable development refers to a system that promotes growth while ensuring that resources are efficiently utilized, investments are productive, and benefits are distributed equitably. A development programme cannot be called sustainable if it creates growth at the cost of debt burdens, financial crises, or unequal access to resources. Social sustainability, on the other hand, ensures that development initiatives are inclusive, reduce inequalities, empower marginalized groups, and improve overall quality of life. Without addressing the social dimension, growth can worsen disparities, leading to unrest and instability. Environmental sustainability ensures that natural resources are used responsibly, ecosystems are protected, and ecological balance is maintained.
