बंटी अपने घर में घूम रहा है। पर अपने घर जैसा कुछ भी तो नहीं लगा रहा उसे। सर्दी के दिनों में सांझा से ही तो चारों ओर अँधेरा घुसने लगता है। और जैसे-जैसे अँधेरा घुलता जा रहा है, सब कुछ और ज्यादा-ज्यादा अपरिचित होता जा रहा है। यहाँ तो आसमान भी पहचाना हुआ नहीं लगता, हवा भी पहचानी हुई नहीं लगती। अपने घर का आसमान और अपने घर की हवा कहीं ऐसी होती है?

तुलसी ने सीढ़ियाँ पार की, ड्योढ़ी, बगीचा और फाटक पार किया, बाहर निकल आए। सड़क पर कुछ दूर जाकर उन्होंने एक बार और उस घर पर दृष्टि डाली। लगा कि जैसे जीव का अपने एक जन्म से साथ छूट रहा हो। मन अब भी सब कुछ वही चाहता है, किंतु ज्ञान यथार्थ-बोध कराता है। जो मनुष्य बनकर जन्मता है उसके मन को यह हक है कि वह असंभव से असंभव वस्तु की चाहना भी कर ले, पर उसे पाने की शक्ति और औचित्य के बिना क्या वह हक यथार्थ है ? अपनी परिस्थियिों पर विचार न करनेवाला व्यक्ति मूर्ख होता है।

 मैं आठवीं क्लास में पढ़ता था। तब मैं क्या समहाता हूँगा, क्या नहीं समझाता हूँगा। फिर भी वह बातें मुझे बिल्कुल अच्छी नहीं मालूम हो रही थीं। जी में कुछ बेमतलब गुस्सा चढ़ता आता था। जी होता था कि वहीं के वहीं कोई दुस्सह अविनय कर डालूँ। ऐसे भाव की कोई वजह न थी, पर बाबू जी की कुछ दबी हुई स्थिति की झलक उनके चेहरे पर देखकर बड़ी खीझ मालूम हो रही थी, पर जाने मुझे क्या चीज रोक रही थी कि मैं फट नहीं पड़ा।

एक पूरा मकान बर्तन से भरा हुआ है। चाय के सेट हैं, नाश्ते की तश्तरियाँ थाल, लोटे, गिलास। जो लोग नित्य खाट पर पड़े हुक्का पीते रहते थे, बड़ी तत्परता से काम में लगे हुए हैं। अपनी उपयोगिता सिद्ध करने का ऐसा अच्छा अवसर उन्हें फिर बहुत दिनों के बाद मिलेगा। जहाँ एक आदमी को जाना होता है, पाँच दौड़ते हैं। काम कम होता है, हुल्लड़ अधिक। जरा-जरा-सी बात पर घण्टों तर्क-वितर्क होता है और अन्त में वकील साहब को आकर निर्णय करना पड़ता है।
