Social welfare services in the country were introduced to deal with various social problems in the country. After its independence, the Ministry of Social Affairs launched various social welfare programmes to help the poor. Several non-profit organizations such as Yayasan Pembinaan Anak–Anak Cacat and Ministry of Social Affairs were also established. Indonesia has three types of social workers: Voluntary social workers who work under NGO, functional social workers under the government departments; and professional social workers who are educationally qualified. For the first time in 1957, training programme was started in Bandung. Now 33 universities offer various programmes in social work.
