# The Satavahana State The Satavahana state was one of the important political formations of ancient India and played a significant role in the political history of the Deccan. The Satavahanas, also known as the Andhras in some literary sources, established a powerful kingdom after the decline of the Mauryan Empire. Their rule extended roughly from the late first century BCE to the early third century CE, although the exact chronology remains debated. Their political centre was mainly in the Deccan, with important centres at Pratishthana (modern Paithan) and later Amaravati. The Satavahana state connected northern and southern India and contributed to the development of regional political institutions, trade, administration and culture. The emergence of the Satavahanas is generally associated with the political fragmentation that followed the decline of Mauryan authority. Simuka is traditionally regarded as the founder of the dynasty. His successors gradually expanded Satavahana authority over large parts of the Deccan. Early rulers consolidated their position in the western and central Deccan, while later rulers extended their influence towards eastern and southern regions. The political history of the dynasty was marked by both expansion and conflict with neighbouring powers, particularly the Western Kshatrapas.
