Write a note on the hero-Stones during early Medieval times.

Hero stones, also known as viragal or veeragallu, were significant commemorative monuments that emerged during the early medieval times in South India. These stones played a vital role in the socio-cultural fabric of the region and served as a medium for honoring and remembering heroic individuals who had sacrificed their lives in battles or other acts of valor. The hero stones not only acted as memorials but also provided insights into the political, social, and religious aspects of the time. This note will explore the characteristics, significance, and cultural context of hero stones during early medieval times.

Hero stones were typically upright stone slabs or pillars, often intricately carved, and placed in open spaces or specific locations such as roadsides, village entrances, or temple precincts. They were predominantly found in present-day Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, regions which witnessed significant political and social developments during the early medieval period. These stones were primarily dedicated to warriors, soldiers, and occasionally, civilians who had displayed exceptional bravery or self-sacrifice.

The hero stones were crafted by skilled artisans who belonged to various regional artistic traditions. They were often made of granite or other locally available stones. The craftsmanship ______ ________ ___ _________ ______ ___ _______ ______ _________ _____ __________.
