The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 is an important Indian legislation aimed at protecting the rights, dignity, equality and participation of persons with disabilities. It replaced the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995 and brought Indian law more closely in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Act recognizes disability as an issue of human rights, social equality and participation rather than merely a matter of welfare. The Act provides a broader definition of disability and recognizes a larger number of specified disabilities than the earlier legislation.
