The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) is a policy think tank of the Government of India established on 1 January 2015 through a Union Cabinet resolution. It replaced the Planning Commission, which had been functioning since 1950. The creation of NITI Aayog marked a shift from a centralized planning model to a more cooperative, flexible and participatory approach to governance and development. It functions as an important institution within the administrative system at the Union level by providing strategic and technical advice to the government. NITI Aayog was established with the objective of promoting cooperative federalism by involving states and Union Territories in the policy-making process.
