Re-study in ethnography is an essential methodological and analytical tool that allows anthropologists to revisit previously studied communities, settings, or issues to explore continuities and changes over time. Unlike initial ethnographic studies that aim to present a holistic understanding of a culture or society at a particular moment, re-studies allow for longitudinal insight, helping scholars to understand the impacts of historical, political, economic, and social transformations. In comparative ethnography, where multiple societies or temporal phases are compared, re-studies gain heightened importance because they introduce temporal comparison into cultural analysis, thus adding complexity and depth to anthropological inquiry. Re-studies in ethnography can be categorized into several types: (1) repeat studies by the same researcher, (2) re-studies by other researchers in the same field site, (3) comparative studies of neighboring or similar communities, and (4) re-interpretations of earlier data in light of new theoretical frameworks. Each type serves to evaluate, confirm, contradict, or expand earlier findings. This process also helps critically assess the assumptions, biases, and limitations of the original ethnographic work. One of the most well-known examples of ethnographic re-study is Margaret Mead’s work in Samoa and the later re-examination by Derek Freeman. Mead, in her 1928 study *Coming of Age in Samoa*, concluded that Samoan adolescence was relatively stress-free compared to Western societies, suggesting that culture, rather than biology, shaped human behavior. Decades later, Freeman challenged her findings, claiming that Mead was misled by her informants and that Samoan society was more restrictive and hierarchical than she portrayed. While Freeman’s critique has also been criticized for its methodological and ideological bias, the debate between Mead and Freeman highlights the importance of re-study in re-evaluating ethnographic claims, especially when those claims have had wide influence.
