Phenomenology is a philosophical movement and a rigorous method of inquiry that seeks to investigate the structures of conscious experience as they are directly given to consciousness. Developed primarily by Edmund Husserl in the early twentieth century, phenomenology emerged as a response to the dominance of naturalism, psychologism, and speculative metaphysics. Husserl argued that philosophy should return "to the things themselves," meaning that philosophical inquiry must begin with the careful description of lived experience rather than with preconceived theories or scientific explanations. Instead of asking whether objects exist independently of the mind, phenomenology examines how objects are experienced, how they appear to consciousness, and what essential structures make such experiences possible. Phenomenology is founded on the principle of intentionality, according to which every act of consciousness is directed toward something. Consciousness is always consciousness of an object, whether that object is a physical thing, a mathematical concept, a memory, an emotion, or an imagined event. This intentional relation reveals that subject and object are not isolated entities but are interconnected through experience. The object is always presented in a particular manner to consciousness, and the task of phenomenology is to describe this presentation without introducing external assumptions. Husserl proposed several methodological steps to achieve this objective. The first is the phenomenological reduction or epoché. In everyday life, people naturally assume that the world exists independently of their perceptions. Husserl called this the natural attitude. Phenomenological inquiry requires suspending or bracketing these assumptions, not by denying the world's existence but by temporarily setting aside questions about objective reality. This enables the philosopher to focus exclusively on how phenomena are experienced. The second step is eidetic reduction, through which the investigator seeks the essential characteristics of an experience. By imaginatively varying different aspects of an experience while retaining its identity, one identifies the invariant features that constitute its essence. The third step is transcendental reduction, which investigates the role of transcendental consciousness in constituting the meaning and objectivity of experience.
