Employee integrity refers to the quality of being honest, ethical, trustworthy, responsible, and consistent in one’s words, decisions, and actions. In the context of business ethics, integrity means that employees perform their duties according to accepted moral principles and organisational values, even when there is no direct supervision or when unethical behaviour might provide personal benefits. An employee with integrity does not compromise ethical standards for personal gain and demonstrates consistency between what he or she believes, says, and does. Employee integrity is therefore an important foundation of ethical organisational behaviour, because the conduct of individual employees directly influences the ethical culture, reputation, and long-term success of an organisation. Integrity involves more than simply avoiding dishonest behaviour. It includes fairness, respect, accountability, transparency, loyalty, responsibility, and the courage to make ethical choices in difficult situations. An employee may possess technical competence and professional knowledge, but these qualities alone cannot ensure ethical conduct. An employee who uses organisational resources honestly, protects confidential information, treats colleagues fairly, accepts responsibility for mistakes, and follows established ethical standards demonstrates genuine integrity. One important trait of an employee showing integrity is honesty. Honest employees provide accurate information, communicate facts truthfully, and do not deliberately mislead colleagues, customers, managers, or other stakeholders. They do not manipulate records, falsify reports, conceal important information, or make false claims to obtain personal or organisational advantages. For example, if an employee discovers an error in a financial report, an honest employee reports the error rather than hiding it to avoid criticism. Honesty builds confidence and strengthens relationships within the organisation. Trustworthiness is another significant characteristic of integrity. Employees with integrity can be relied upon to fulfil their commitments and responsibilities. They keep promises, respect agreements, and handle sensitive matters responsibly. Managers and colleagues can depend on trustworthy employees because their behaviour is predictable and consistent.
