Discourse Ethics is a modern ethical theory developed primarily by Jürgen Habermas and Karl-Otto Apel. It seeks to provide a rational foundation for morality through communication and dialogue rather than through metaphysical assumptions, religious doctrines, or individual preferences. The theory emerged from the tradition of critical theory and was influenced by Kantian ethics, pragmatism, and linguistic philosophy. According to Discourse Ethics, moral norms are justified not because they correspond to divine commands or natural laws, but because they can gain the rational acceptance of all affected persons through free and open communication. The central idea of Discourse Ethics is that moral validity depends upon the possibility of achieving agreement among participants in a practical discourse. Human beings are communicative agents who engage in argumentation to resolve disagreements. Whenever individuals enter into genuine discussion, they implicitly accept certain norms such as truthfulness, sincerity, equality, and mutual respect. Habermas argues that these presuppositions provide the basis for morality. Habermas formulates two important principles. The first is the Principle of Universalization (U), according to which a moral norm is valid only when the foreseeable consequences and side effects of its general observance can be accepted by all those affected. The second is the Discourse Principle (D), which states that only those norms can claim validity that could receive the agreement of all participants in a practical discourse.
