Ernst Cassirer, a German philosopher of the twentieth century, proposed that human beings should not be understood merely as rational animals, as Aristotle had described them, but more fundamentally as “Animal Symbolicum” or “symbolic animals.” According to Cassirer, the distinctive feature of human existence is not only the ability to reason but the capacity to create, interpret, and live within a world of symbols. Human beings do not relate to reality in a purely direct and instinctive manner; rather, they understand and organize their experience through complex symbolic systems such as language, myth, religion, art, science, and culture. The concept of Animal Symbolicum appears in Cassirer’s major philosophical work, “An Essay on Man,” where he develops his philosophy of symbolic forms. Cassirer argues that human beings are surrounded by a symbolic universe that they themselves create.
