### Introduction  

Radioactive radiation originates from both natural and artificial sources, contributing to environmental radioactivity. The sources of radioactive radiation are divided into natural and man-made categories, each playing a significant role in radiation exposure. ### Sources of Radioactive Radiation  

#### 1. Natural Sources  

Natural sources contribute significantly to background radiation, which affects all living organisms. These include cosmic rays, terrestrial radiation, and internal radiation.  

##### (a) Cosmic Radiation  
Cosmic radiation originates from outer space, mainly from the sun and distant stars. High-energy particles, such as protons and heavier atomic nuclei, collide with Earth's atmosphere, producing secondary radiation, including neutrons and muons. The intensity of cosmic radiation increases with altitude; hence, people living in high-altitude areas and frequent air travelers receive higher doses.  

##### (b) Terrestrial Radiation  
Radioactive elements, such as uranium-238, thorium-232, and potassium-40, are naturally present in the Earth's crust. These radionuclides emit radiation as they decay. The concentration of these elements varies with geological formations, affecting radiation levels in different regions. Radon gas, a decay product of uranium, is a significant contributor to indoor radiation exposure.
