Fabrics hold an exalted place in most West African cultures south of the Sahara.

References to fabrics abound in songs, proverbs and myths. Besides clothing the body, they designate a person`s social position, and special fabrics are used in rituals of birth, puberty, marriage and death, as well as in ceremonies of the secret societies.

In an exhibition at the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C., ''Fabrics of Africa: Apparel for Man and Gods South of the Sahara,'' the fabrics can be seen in three ways: as art forms, as social symbols and as dazzling displays of creative technique.
