Sparse matrices are represented using a variety of storage formats, including Compressed Sparse Row (CSR), Compressed Sparse Column (CSC), and Coordinate List (COO) formats. These formats use different strategies to store the non-zero elements of the matrix more efficiently.

For example, let's consider the following 4x4 matrix:
