The Malthusian theory of population growth, first proposed by British economist Thomas Malthus in 1798, argues that the rate of population growth will eventually outstrip the resources available to sustain that population. This theory has been the subject of much debate and criticism over the years, but it remains an important concept in the study of demography and human development.

Malthus argued that human populations tend to grow geometrically (i.e., in a constant ratio) while the resources available to support that population tend to grow arithmetically (i.e., in a fixed amount). He believed that as the population grew, the demand for resources such as food, water, and land would increase, eventually leading to scarcity and famine. Malthus famously wrote that "the power of population is indefinitely greater than the power in the earth to produce subsistence for man."

Malthus proposed two types of checks on population growth: preventive and positive. Preventive checks were those that reduced the birth rate, such as abstinence or delaying marriage. Positive checks were those that increased the death rate, such as famine or disease. Malthus argued that these checks were necessary to prevent overpopulation and maintain a balance between population and resources.
