The Rathore Resistance was an important episode in the history of medieval Bharat, particularly in the political and military struggles of Rajasthan against Mughal expansion. The Rathores were a prominent Rajput clan whose principal centre was Marwar, with Jodhpur as its political stronghold. Their resistance reflected the Rajput tradition of defending political sovereignty, territorial rights, honour and independence. The foundation of Rathore power in Marwar was laid by Rao Chunda and later strengthened by Rao Jodha, who founded Jodhpur in 1459. During the sixteenth century, Rao Maldeo Rathore emerged as one of the most powerful rulers of Rajasthan. He expanded Marwar and challenged the authority of both neighbouring rulers and external powers.
