 An article and a stirring letter by Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, a not-widely-enough-known figure from Indian history who was not just one of our first modern nationalist poets but also the creator of a 'public sphere' in Kolkata and an educator who instilled rationalism and freethinking into a generation of Indian students. Derozio lived only till he was 22 but his students - known as 'Derozians' or 'Young Bengal' - would go on to become luminaries in their own right, and individually and collectively fight for change and progress at the cusp of what is referred to by some historians as the 'Indian' or 'Bengal' 'Renaissance'.
